Thymol-Based Varroa Mite Control for Honey Bee Colonies
Help protect your honey bee colonies from Varroa mites with THYMOVAR® Varroa Mite Treatment Strips, available from Innisfil Creek Honey.
THYMOVAR® is a thymol-based treatment designed to help control Varroa destructor mites in honey bee colonies. Each strip contains thymol, a naturally occurring compound found in thyme and other plants, which is gradually released into the hive during the treatment period.
Designed for placement inside the beehive, THYMOVAR® provides an alternative active ingredient for beekeepers developing an integrated Varroa mite management program.
Each package contains 10 THYMOVAR® treatment strips, making it a convenient option for backyard beekeepers, small apiaries, and commercial beekeeping operations.

How Does THYMOVAR® Work?
THYMOVAR® uses thymol, an active ingredient naturally found in thyme and other plants.
The impregnated strips gradually release thymol vapour inside the hive during the treatment period.
Exposure to thymol helps control Varroa mites within the honey bee colony.
Because thymol evaporation is affected by temperature, the treatment must be used within the conditions specified by the approved product label.
Treatment performance may vary depending on:
-
Environmental temperature.
-
Hive ventilation.
-
Colony strength.
-
Hive configuration.
-
Varroa mite infestation levels.
-
Correct strip placement and treatment duration.
Always follow the current Canadian-approved THYMOVAR® label for the correct treatment conditions.

How to Use THYMOVAR® Treatment Strips
Step 1 – Monitor Varroa Mite Levels
Test your honey bee colonies using an appropriate Varroa mite monitoring method to assess infestation levels.
Step 2 – Review the Product Label
Read the current Canadian-approved THYMOVAR® label and confirm the correct application rate, temperature range, treatment duration, and honey-super restrictions.
Step 3 – Determine the Correct Number of Strips
Select the required number of treatment strips according to your hive configuration and the approved product instructions.
Step 4 – Position the Treatment Strips
Place the THYMOVAR® strips inside the hive as directed by the manufacturer and approved label.
Step 5 – Complete the Treatment Period
Leave the strips in place for the prescribed treatment period, following any required replacement or repeat-application instructions.
Step 6 – Remove Used Treatment Strips
Remove and dispose of used strips according to the approved label and applicable regulations.
Step 7 – Recheck Varroa Mite Levels
Monitor mite levels after treatment to evaluate the results and determine whether additional management is necessary.
Beekeeping Tip: Thymol-based treatments are temperature-sensitive. Follow the approved temperature range to avoid reduced effectiveness or unnecessary stress on your colony.
Why Is Varroa Mite Management Important?
Varroa mites are among the most significant threats to honey bee colony health.
These external parasites feed on honey bees and contribute to the spread of harmful viruses, potentially weakening colonies and reducing winter survival.
Effective Varroa mite management includes:
-
Regular mite monitoring throughout the beekeeping season.
-
Using approved treatments at appropriate times.
-
Following all treatment instructions and restrictions.
-
Maintaining strong, healthy honey bee colonies.
-
Monitoring treatment effectiveness.
-
Rotating appropriate active ingredients as part of an integrated pest management program.
THYMOVAR® provides a thymol-based treatment option for beekeepers managing Varroa mite populations.
