Formic Acid for Varroa and Tracheal Mite Management in Honey Bee Colonies
IMPORTANT: IN-STORE PICKUP ONLY – WE DO NOT SHIP OR DELIVER THIS PRODUCT.
Help manage Varroa and tracheal mite infestations in your honey bee colonies with 65% Liquid Formic Acid, available from Innisfil Creek Honey in convenient 1-litre, 4-litre, and 20-litre containers.
Formic acid is used in certain approved honey bee mite treatments to help control Varroa destructor and tracheal mites. Its vapour can reach mites on adult honey bees and penetrate capped brood cells, providing a treatment option for beekeepers managing mite populations.
Our 65% Liquid Formic Acid is intended for use with compatible Formic Acid Treatment Pads and approved application methods, strictly according to the applicable Canadian pesticide label.
Whether you maintain a few backyard beehives or manage a commercial apiary, our range of container sizes allows you to select the quantity that suits your beekeeping operation.
Due to the hazardous and corrosive nature of liquid formic acid, this product is available for in-store pickup only. We do not ship or deliver liquid formic acid.

How Does Formic Acid Work?
Formic acid is used in certain approved honey bee mite treatments because its vapour can affect mites within the colony.
Under appropriate treatment conditions, formic acid vapour can reach Varroa mites on adult bees and penetrate capped brood cells.
This characteristic distinguishes formic acid from some mite treatments that primarily target mites outside capped brood cells.
Treatment performance depends on several factors, including temperature, hive ventilation, colony conditions, application method, and adherence to the approved product instructions.
IMPORTANT: Use only an authorized treatment method. Instructions for premanufactured formic acid strips or pads must not be assumed to apply to bottled liquid formic acid.
Using Liquid Formic Acid with Formic Acid Pads
65% Liquid Formic Acid may be used with suitable formic acid application pads where the combination and treatment method are expressly authorized.
Always follow the applicable approved product instructions regarding:
-
Appropriate protective equipment.
-

-
Temperature limitations.
-
Hive ventilation.
-
Treatment duration.
-

Do not improvise treatment quantities, pad preparation procedures, or placement methods. Follow the specific Canadian-approved product label.
Why Is Honey Bee Mite Management Important?
Varroa mites and tracheal mites can negatively affect honey bee colony health.
Varroa mites are external parasites that weaken bees and contribute to the transmission of harmful viruses. Tracheal mites infest the respiratory system of adult honey bees and can also affect colony health.
Responsible mite management includes:
-
Regular monitoring of honey bee colonies.
-
Selecting authorized treatments for the target pest.
-
Following seasonal treatment recommendations.
-
Observing approved temperature and hive conditions.
-
Monitoring colony health after treatment.
-
Maintaining strong, healthy colonies throughout the beekeeping season.
