Effective Varroa Mite Control for Honey Bee Colonies

Protect your honey bee colonies with Apivar Varroa Mite Treatment Strips, an amitraz-based contact miticide designed to control Varroa mites (Varroa destructor) in beehives.

Available from Innisfil Creek Honey, Apivar contains 3.3% amitraz and provides extended contact-based treatment that helps control successive generations of Varroa mites as they emerge from capped brood.

Unlike evaporative treatments, Apivar works through direct contact with honey bees rather than relying on chemical vapour release. As worker bees move throughout the brood chamber, they contact the impregnated polymer strips and help distribute the active ingredient through interactions with other bees.

When used correctly, Apivar has demonstrated up to 99% Varroa mite control, according to manufacturer-reported results. Actual effectiveness may vary depending on colony conditions, mite resistance, and proper application.

Choose from 4-strip, 12-strip, or 60-strip packages to suit your beekeeping operation, whether you're maintaining a few backyard colonies or managing a commercial apiary.

How Does Apivar Work?

Apivar uses an amitraz-impregnated polymer strip to control Varroa mites through direct contact.

As worker bees move through the brood chamber, they brush against the treatment strips. Contact between bees helps distribute the active ingredient throughout the colony.

Because Apivar remains in the hive for an extended treatment period, it can target successive generations of Varroa mites emerging from capped brood.

This extended contact action makes Apivar a useful component of an integrated Varroa mite management program.

Apivar Treatment Duration & Application

Apivar is commonly used over a 6–8 week treatment period, depending on the current approved label.

The original product instructions specify:

  • Two strips per brood chamber.

  • A treatment period of 6–8 weeks.

  • Leaving strips in place for at least 6 weeks.

  • Removing strips after the prescribed treatment period.

For effective treatment, strips must be positioned where bees can make appropriate contact with them.

Always follow the current Canadian-approved Apivar product label for the exact number of strips, placement, treatment duration, and removal instructions. Do not exceed the approved treatment period.

Recommended Varroa Mite Management Practices

For effective colony management:

  • Monitor Varroa mite levels before treatment.

  • Follow all instructions on the current Canadian-approved Apivar label.

  • Treat colonies within the same apiary at the same time when appropriate to help reduce reinfestation.

  • Position strips correctly within the brood area.

  • Remove treatment strips at the end of the prescribed treatment period.

  • Monitor mite levels after treatment to evaluate effectiveness.

  • Rotate between suitable treatment products with different modes of action to help manage resistance.

Important: Repeated use of amitraz-based treatments may contribute to Varroa mite resistance. Follow current provincial apiculture recommendations when planning seasonal treatments.

Important Honey Super Restrictions

DO NOT USE APIVAR WHILE HONEY SUPERS ARE ON THE HIVE.

Apivar should be used only in accordance with the current Canadian-approved label, including all restrictions relating to honey supers, treatment timing, and honey harvesting.

Do not reinstall honey supers until permitted by the approved label.
